Most pool owners start out handling their own maintenance. And for a while, it works fine — skim the surface, throw in some chlorine, check the filter. But pools are more complex than they look, and there are some warning signs that tell you it's time to bring in help before a small issue becomes an expensive one.
Your Water Won't Stay Clear
If you're constantly battling cloudy or greenish water even though you're adding chlorine regularly, the problem is usually in the water chemistry — not the chlorine itself. pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, cyanuric acid, and sanitizer levels all interact with each other. When one is off, it throws the others out of balance.
Utah's hard water makes this especially tricky. High calcium can cause cloudiness even when chlorine levels test fine. A professional tests for all the parameters — not just chlorine — and knows how to bring them into balance together.
You Keep Getting Algae
An occasional algae bloom after a heat wave or a busy pool party is one thing. But if you're seeing algae come back every few weeks, something systemic is off — your sanitizer isn't holding, your filter isn't circulating properly, or there's a dead spot in your pool where water doesn't flow well.
Persistent algae can also indicate cyanuric acid (CYA) is too high. CYA protects chlorine from UV, but when it builds up beyond 80-100 ppm, it actually locks up your chlorine and makes it ineffective. The only fix is a partial drain and refill — which is something a lot of DIY pool owners don't realize.
Your Equipment Is Acting Up
Weird noises from the pump. Filter pressure that's too high or too low. A heater that takes forever to warm up. Salt cell that keeps throwing error codes. These aren't things you should ignore or try to fix by watching a YouTube video if you're not comfortable with pool equipment.
Pool equipment problems often start small but get expensive fast. A pump that's cavitating because of an air leak will burn out if you run it too long. A filter that's operating at high pressure means something is clogged or broken inside. Catching these early saves real money.
You See Staining or Scaling
White crusty buildup on the tile line, brown or green stains on the plaster, or rough patches on pool surfaces are all signs of mineral imbalance. In Utah, calcium scaling is the most common culprit, but iron and copper staining can happen too — especially if you fill from well water.
Once staining or scaling sets in, it's hard to reverse without the right chemicals and technique. An acid wash or stain treatment done incorrectly can damage your pool surface. This is one of those situations where professional help pays for itself.
You're Spending More Time Than You Expected
Pool maintenance should take 15-20 minutes a week if everything is dialed in. If you're spending an hour or more every weekend testing, adjusting, cleaning, and troubleshooting, something's wrong. Either the pool has an underlying issue, or the maintenance routine isn't effective.
A lot of our customers tell us they switched to professional service not because they couldn't do it themselves, but because they got tired of spending their weekends on it. They wanted to enjoy their pool, not work on it.
